Music Vs. Stillness, Before & After

Before

When there is music, there are notes all around, sounds vibrating, tones mixing together to make harmonies.  When there is stillness, there is quiet, sometimes small background noises, but mostly just quiet.  And I love both.  I love the stillness the most after the sounds of the music.  It’s like after a big party…you’ve had fun, laughter, great conversations, good food and drink.  Then they go home, and your home is silent and still again.  The difference is overwhelming at first, and you just sink into the quiet.

The differences and contrasts in life are what make this life fun and exciting, and sometimes peaceful and quiet.  We all need a little of both.  I’m so thankful that God made music; it’s just about my favorite thing in the world.  But I’m equally thankful for the stillness, where I can be at rest and listen for His Voice.

Sheep in My Head All Night

That’s right…I said, “sheep”, not “sleep.”  I did sleep, but mostly I heard a particular song that we recorded yesterday, “Sheep of Portmagee.”  Over and over and over.  It was like the soundtrack to my nighttime dream adventures.   🙂

Thanks for any of you who said some prayers…they helped alot!  We got all the scratch vocals and the piano & hammered dulcimer tracks recorded yesterday.  Today is the fun part, with the other musicians coming in…fiddle, tinwhistle & Irish flute, guitar, and bodhran.  I can’t wait to hear how much better the songs will sound once they’re layered in.

It’s like life…solo I’m ok, I’ll do, I can be a blessing if I’m not being lazy.  But when we work together as a group, as a team of people with the same mission and goal, it’s amazingly better, fuller, richer, and more productive.  I know I’ll come away from today being blessed by these other musicians, by their artistry, by their work ethic, and by their willingness to help with this project.

Have a wonderful day, whether solo or in a group.   🙂  Slainte, Lisa

Irish Air

I sing of the ocean wild and strong

I sing of the God who is stronger

The God who loves me through it all

And never leaves my side….

I sing of the beauty that He has made

I sing of His grace and mercy

The mercy that found me and saved my life

The mercy that set me free

Yes, He has set me free…

(“Air”, c 2012 Lisa Lyons, Flight of Freedom)

Going into the studio today…excited, nervous, both!  🙂  If you like to pray, please pray for me to feel God’s peace and to sing for Him.

Have a wonderful day!  Slainte, Lisa

Singing a New Song

I want to sing a new song.  Something different, something new, something that I haven’t sung before.  The biggest fear as a songwriter is writing something that sounds like another song.  Yet I’m surrounded by influences, music echoing through my mind all day.

So I guess you take the good, discard the bad, and try to put your own spin on the song the best you can.  And look above for the inspiration, for the creative spark which originates from God.

Here’s a clip of U2 singing “40”, based on Psalm 40, filmed at Red Rocks.  “I will sing, sing a new song.”

Picking a Favorite

Many different instruments can be used to create the wonder that is celtic music.  Fiddle, tinwhistle, low whistle, guitar, accordian, bodhran drum, uillean pipes, hammered dulcimer, piano…..I’m sure I’m leaving out some, but you get the basic idea.  The other day as I was listening to a recording I tried to decide which instrument was my very favorite…the one I would miss the most if it was missing.  The winner?……..

The tinwhistles and low whistles…without a doubt.  Very expressive instruments that seem to “sing” the Irish melodies with just the right amount of melancholy or joy, depending on the tune.  I have some whistles, and have yet to capture the right sound.  Oh, I can play most of the notes, but there is so much more than that…the small little turns and dips and expression that makes it such a wonderful instrument.  But I’m glad I can’t play them right yet; it gives me something to work on to keep me out of trouble!  🙂

Enjoy whatever kind of music you’re listening to today, and sing to the Lord a new song!  Slainte, Lisa
