Hammering On

DSCN0472

Hammered dulcimers have been around since the first century, introduced into Irish traditional music since at least the 1700’s.  They are hollow wooden boxes with lots and lots of strings, which you hit with wooden hammers to produce the sound.  And that of course, is the tricky part.  🙂  Being a lifelong piano player, I was drawn to this instrument the first time I saw it sitting in a music store about 15 years ago.  I took my new stringed baby home, and thought, “no problem…I got this.”  Wrong.  It is amazingly difficult for me to manage to hit those little silvery, sometimes invisible in certain lights, strings with any measure of consistency.  But that doesn’t stop me from trying.   I still love my stringed baby and the sounds he makes.  And to me, life is all the better for still having a challenge, something new to learn.   Here’s a video of one of my musical heroes, Rich Mullins, playing his hammered dulcimer.  Enjoy.  Whatever your hands find to do today, do it the best you can, with a grateful heart that God has made you, that you are able to do things, and that it can bring Him glory.  🙂  Slainte, Lisa

If I Was a Sheep

100_1582

If I was a sheep, I would eat the grass right in front of me, and then two steps ahead, and then two steps ahead of that.

If I was a sheep, I would walk around in green fields and find contentment with my sheep family.

If I was a sheep, I would lie down at the end of the day, or in the middle of a hot day, and sleep soundly.

If I was a sheep, I would come when my shepherd called me, because I know that he has the good food.

If I was a sheep, I would follow the other sheep and the shepherd into a new and better field without questioning.

I am a sheep, and Jesus is my shepherd.  I just need to learn to listen and trust him better.  Blessings, Lisa

“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me-just as the Father knows me and I know the Father-and I lay down my life for the sheep.”  (John 10:14-15)

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” – Psalm 23:1

On Track

IMG_3198
When you’re hiking, you can get lost pretty quickly if you don’t stay on the trail.  Things start looking the same and you can get turned around and disoriented.  In dancing or figure skating, experts say to keep your eyes fixed on one focal point, so that you won’t get dizzy during spins; it keeps you grounded.  In my life, if I take my eyes off God, I can get dizzy and lost and disoriented really quickly.  And then I always wonder what happened….how did I get so discouraged?  It usually takes me a few days to realize what I did…I lost sight of my focal point, my constant.

“Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own.  Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; He’s the one who will keep you on track.”                                                                                                           – Proverbs 3:5-6 (The Message)

I pray that I can keep focused on His voice, and I pray the same for you today.  Blessings, Lisa

Praying

Oklahoma

Yesterday was a rough day…sad news from Oklahoma, sad news from friends, worries about others.  It drove me to praying pretty quick.  I know that many of you are doing the same thing.  And I’m also praying that I keep praying…that I don’t forget to keep lifting these people up in the days to come.  Blessings, Lisa

“O Lord, the God who saves me, day and night I cry out before you.  may my prayer come before you; turn your ear to my cry.” – Psalm 88:1-2

“From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.  For you have been my refuge, a strong tower…” – Psalm 61:2-3

What Do I Know?

What do I know?  I laughingly say that I am learning that I know very little.  🙂  When I was in my 20’s, I prided myself on being an educated, intelligent person who felt she could figure out most things if given enough time.  But I tell you, as the 30’s and now 40’s are rolling by, I don’t know as much as I thought I did.  And if nothing else will do it, parenting will show you quickly that you really can’t control everything and figure everything out.  Life is a complicated business, with more turns and thrill hills than a rollercoaster.

What do I know?  I know that I love my family, my friends, music, God.  I know that I am thankful that my dog is laying on the floor next to me as I write this.  I know that a little bird is singing his head off outside my window.  And I know that “neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  (Romans 8:38-39)  And that’s enough to know.  Blessings on your day, Lisa
