Lost & Found

Yesterday, my daughter lost her first baby tooth, after much wiggling, fretting, excitement, and general carrying-on.  The whole household rejoiced with our last “baby” as she seems to be growing up very quickly all of a sudden.  Happy for her, but there is a bittersweet feeling as a parent as you watch that little one bloom into the young lady that God has planned for her to be.  Here is a very poorly lit picture of the momentous moment and the tooth gap.  (Why is it you can never find the camera at these moments?  Thank goodness for computer cams)

She is now fixated on the new “big girl” tooth that will be coming in; checking the mirror, asking me if I see it yet.  She has lost a tooth, but she will find a new one.  What is lost is found.  I was lost, but now I’m found.  Thank you, Jesus, for finding me when I was lost, and giving me new life.  Thank you also for the gift of watching old things become new, everyday, all around me.  Old teeth fall out, new ones come in.  Old caterpillars burst forth into new beautiful flying butterflies.  I feel joyful this morning watching Amy’s excitement, and I am so thankful for that.

The Impulse to Soar, Part Two

This is a reprint of an older blog about Fungi, the amazing Fungi dolphin.  I saw a beautiful video of him today that I had to share with you.  He has lived 30 years in Dingle Bay now, and he’s so friendly.  Please take the time to watch…he will make you wonder all over again at the marvel of God’s creations.  Slainte, Lisa

“One can never consent to creep when one feels an impulse to soar.” -Helen Keller

Fungi, the Dingle dolphin, feel the impulse to soar, and he does so magnificently.

I have days when I just go through the motions: get up, make breakfast, walk the dog, etc.  I don’t see the small beautiful things that God is putting all around me to show me that He’s there, that He cares, that He loves me.  But some days, I wake up and I still do all those things, but by the grace of God, He somehow awakens me to those small wonders.  I feel the impulse to soar.  I have that sense that God is right there beside me and that He will help me to be more like Him, little by little.  We are made in the image of God, and a little of His awesome creativity has been put into each of us.

As I have gotten older, I am slowly learning not to really trust my ups and downs of emotions (this is extremely hard for me).  But still, it is an amazing feeling when I do feel and sense God’s reality, that there is more to life than what I see right in front of me.  And that reality is that if I love and trust Him, I will soar and fly and have strength for the road ahead.

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”  (Isaiah 40:31)

The Importance of Timing

There’s a great country song called, “Timing Is Everything,” from the Country Strong movie soundtrack.  And it talks about, you guessed it, the importance of timing.  We meet the love of our life by walking into a room at just the right time to meet them.  We find that great job by meeting just the right person who can connect us.

Here is a picture of my son crossing some rocks over the water at Reencaheragh Strand in Portmagee.  The rocks were prominent and easy to traverse at this picture-taking moment, but when he came back an hour later, the tide was coming in, fast, and not much of the rocks were visible.  Needless to say, he picked up his pace.  If he had been an hour later, he would have had to scramble up on the cliff and find another way home.  Timing.

But there is a Keeper of the Time, One who knows exactly when and how and where we should be.  God knows just what time it is, and we just need to follow Him and listen to the ticking of His clock.  I think I’ve pushed the time metaphors at this point, but you know what I mean.  God is always right on time, never early, never late.

Wings of the Wind

Joshua on Bray’s Head, Ireland. Off in the sea is Skellig Michael, ancient home of a monastery.

“Wings of the Wind”

Who made the water to flow from the mountain?

Birds flying by to nest beside their shores

You made the earth to satisfy Your people

In Your hand, there’s only good

There is the sea, so vast & spacious

Full of more creatures than we could ever know

Who controls the waves & takes care of His people?

You can renew the face of the earth.

Praise You, Lord, oh my soul

Oh Lord my God, You are so great

You wrap Yourself in Light unending

And You ride the wings of the wind

(from Flight of Freedom, c 2012 Lisa Lyons)

I am overwhelmed with His goodness and His creativity.  He makes things beautiful, full of purpose.  And His travels are on the wings of the wind.  Slainte, Lisa

Castle Tunnels and Other Places to Hide

Sometimes we all feel like we need a place to hide, to feel safe, to get away for a little while.  In my house, that tends to be my piano, or a walk outside with my sweet dog, or the bathroom.  In castle days, that place to hide took the form of an underground set of tunnels.  We got to explore Blarney Castle’s underground tunnels.

Queen Elizabeth I wanted Blarney Castle for her own and sent her emissary, Earl of Leicester, to the castle for discussions with Cormac McCarthy, who had possession of the castle.  McCarthy kept putting the Earl off with banquets and delays; Queen Elizabeth I declared the reports to be “Blarney”.  One of Cromwell’s generals gutted the tower walls, but the castle inhabitants and defenders escaped through the underground tunnels, called Badgers Caves.

David said in the Psalms, “For in the day of trouble He will keep me safe in his dwelling; He will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock.”  (Psalm 27:5)  The best hiding place, safe place, security that exists is God.  He can tunnel us safely away from the attackers in this life, and lead us to green pastures beside the still waters.    Slainte, Lisa
