“So, What Do You Do?”

Scenario 1: You are meeting people in a social situation of any kind. Someone new comes up to you and says, “So….what do you do?”

You hem and haw, and feel that strange, slightly apologetic and defensive response come forth. “I am a writer. (or singer, or composer, or artist, or fill in the blank)” You use a subdued voice, looking towards the floor slightly.

“Wow. Can you make a living with that?” Only the truly bold acquaintance will muster that, but you feel it just the same, no matter the words or expressions chosen.

“Well, I am working on a novel, or art piece, or album….” Your voice trails off and you anxiously look for the exit to this conversation. You skillfully turn it to another topic and breathe a sigh of relief.

Scenario 2: Same setting. “So….what do you do?”

You stand up straight and smile. “I am an artist. (or writer, or singer, or composer)”, said in your normal happy speaking voice. Direct eye contact.

“Wow. That’s cool. I wish I had the guts to try something like that. Can you make a living?”

You smile again, letting them know within that smile that, no, not quite yet, but yes, it doesn’t really matter at this point.

They realize you aren’t going to answer that question, as it is immaterial. “Tell me about it. Sounds awesome.”

Just a bit of encouragement to all you artists, musicians, writers, etc. out there. No apologies. You are created in the image of God, who happens to be extremely artistic and creative Himself.

When I See

This song was written as I journeyed through a difficult passage of life. I pray it encourages your soul this morning, no matter what you are traveling through. Jesus never leaves us or forsakes us. He will come in glory in the clouds someday soon, and we will see Him. And every tear will be wiped away. Praise God! If you need prayer, let me know. I would love to pray for you. Blessings, Lisa

In Mind of Ireland

County Sligo, Ireland
County Sligo, Ireland

It is a soft, misty morning here in Virginia.  The clouds are draped softly on the trees, the grass, the ground.  The white swirls around as I drive.  I feel as if I am wrapped in a soft fluffy blanket, and I am instantly, happily, back in Ireland on a similar day.

A low whistle, the uillean pipes, the guitar, the lyrical stories in song fill my car’s speakers.  I begin to smile, to imagine, to be there.

Sitting in the pub, on a soft misty day, eating an amazing fresh-caught fish, a lovely Smithwick’s pint to wash it down.

Not knowing exactly what will happen next, but blissfully not worrying about it.

Listening to the session musicians, watching the set dancing….people much older than me who could dance as if they had springs underfoot.

The dark, warm wooden tones of the pub wrapping you up to insulate against anything the outside might throw your way.

What a lovely morning of imagining, of remembering, it has been.

Rise Above the Clouds

Take a close look at this photograph taken at Silver Strand beach in Ireland. Let your gaze focus upward. The yellow flowers growing in stone, the sheep grazing above the dangerous precipice?

There are challenging situations all around the flowers and the sheep, but they have moved past them, above them, through them.

Think of an airplane approaching an angry storm, dark lightning-filled clouds. If at all possible, the plane gains altitude and flies above the clouds. It sets its path beyond or around the storm and does not fly through it.

In my life, there are many scary precipices, stony rocks, dark storm clouds. But I do not want to focus on that. I do not want to fly through them anymore. I want to rise above the clouds. I want to soar with wings like eagles. I want to fix my eyes on Jesus Christ, my Savior, my peace.

Life races by at a breakneck pace. Days turn into years at an alarming rate. I want to fly, to grow beautiful flowers, to eat delicious food. I want to laugh, to smile, to love with my whole heart, to see new things, to appreciate the old. I want to live with the best attitude that God can give me. I want to enjoy this beautiful God-given life.

Lord, let me rise above the clouds. Love, Lisa
