My darling husband and I just returned from a 25th anniversary cruise of the Southern Caribbean, and had a marvelous time. Now that we are back to reality (!!!) and away from the sun, sand, total spoiling, and relaxation, one of the biggest things that stands out for me is all the wonderful local people we met along the way. We decided to be independent explorers on each island, and just hire local taxi drivers when we got there to take us to cool places and tell us about them on the journey.
Two standouts were Delaney on St. Kitts and Ralph on Barbados. Two extremely intelligent and interesting men who seemed to know everything about their countries. I tell you, I would be a terrible taxi driver for Virginia, where I live. People would get in my taxi, ask me some questions, and I would be like, “well, ummm….let me think….” 🙂
Delaney was a mechanical engineer who had lived on St. Kitts all his life, had an 87 year old mom that we waved to on her front porch as we drove by, and had snowy egrets camping in a tree outside his neighborhood to ward off the tics. Ralph likes to travel to Florida, but always comes back to Barbados, had 11 brothers and sisters, and sings in an amazing baritone in his church choir. We had a blast singing in his cab to Nat King Cole, Hank Williams, and sixties Motown. He says that goat’s milk has great health benefits and stopped at a goat farm for 20 minutes to get a fresh glass for himself on the journey. 🙂 Good times, nice people, wonderful memories. Have a great weekend! Slainte, Lisa
My like button is still “loading.” Everyone might be experiencing this same problem. I had a similar experience in St. Thomas. That cab driver literally made our vacation. Thanks for sharing.
That happens to me also sometimes when I try to like someone’s blog…not sure why. Hope your day was a great one; thanks for writing! 🙂
May these beautiful memories always live in your heart and brighten the darkest of days that may sometimes come your way! Ann
